Periodontal disease, also known as gum disease, is an oral condition which affects the gums and supporting structures in your mouth. It begins as a bacterial infection and gradually progresses until it destroys your gums and bone structure. The milder stage of gum disease is known as gingivitis, and the more severe stage is known as periodontitis. Periodontal disease has been linked to a number of medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, osteoporosis and premature and low birth weight babies.
Common symptoms of periodontal disease include:
  • Red, swollen or tender gums, or other pain in your mouth
  • Bleeding while brushing, flossing or eating hard foods
  • Gums that are receding or pulling away from the teeth
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Pus between your gums and teeth
  • Sores in your mouth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
  • A change in the fit of dentures or other removable appliances
Gum disease can be prevented with good oral hygiene and regular preventive care, and if diagnosed early, it can be successfully treated. However, if the disease progresses to a more advanced stage it may never be successfully eliminated from your mouth. Our dentists will work with you to develop a treatment plan that will manage your gum disease and help improve your oral health. Treatments for gum disease include:
  • Nonsurgical treatments, including scaling and root planing, and antibiotic therapy
  • Periodontal surgery, such as soft tissue grafting, gingivectomy, and osseous surgery
  • Laser dentistry
  • Implant dentistry
  • Improved at-home care, such as special toothpaste, prescription trays, and mouthwashes
After being treated for periodontal disease you will also require regular sessions for periodontal maintenance to help keep your mouth healthy. Our dentists and team will schedule these appointments for you after you have completed your initial treatment.
